Eviction Ban: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] Dail Éireann — 2023-03-22 ============================================================ Seán Ó Fearghaíl (CC), Kildare South I must now deal with a postponed division relating to amendment No. 1 to Government amendment No. 5. On Tuesday, 22 March 2023, on the question, "That the amendment to the amendment be made”, a division was claimed. That division will be taken now. Ged Nash (LAB), Louth On a point of order under Standing Order 213, I ask the Taoiseach how much has it cost the Government to buy the votes of the Regional Independent Group to----- Seán Ó Fearghaíl (CC), Kildare South That is not a point of order. Ged Nash (LAB), Louth -----enable them to evict thousands of people from their homes. Seán Ó Fearghaíl (CC), Kildare South That is not a point of order. Fergus O'Dowd (FG), Louth Deputy Nash will have to do better than that. Ged Nash (LAB), Louth It is a valid request under Standing Order 213. Ged Nash (LAB), Louth In order to be helpful I can read it out to the Ceann Comhairle. It is on grants for public service. Seán Ó Fearghaíl (CC), Kildare South You are not being a bit helpful. Once a division has been claimed you may not raise a point of order. Ged Nash (LAB), Louth It is a significant point of order on the expenditure of public money. Seán Ó Fearghaíl (CC), Kildare South Salient Ruling 487 is quite clear. Please resume your seat. Ged Nash (LAB), Louth The Dáil is entitled to know----- Seán Ó Fearghaíl (CC), Kildare South Please resume your seat. Ged Nash (LAB), Louth The Dáil is entitled to know what this is going to cost the taxpayer. Seán Ó Fearghaíl (CC), Kildare South The Dáil is entitled to adhere----- Ged Nash (LAB), Louth There are also several pieces of legislation that will require to be amended to enable this grubby deal to be given effect. Seán Ó Fearghaíl (CC), Kildare South The Dáil is entitled to adhere to proper procedure. If you do not like the procedure then change it. Michael Healy-Rae (IND), Kerry How much it did it cost to get Labour to do away with the death grant? Ged Nash (LAB), Louth Standing Order 213. Peadar Tóibín (AON), Meath West I move amendment No. 2 to amendment No. 5: To insert the following after "increased capacity in the construction sector": "calls on the Government to make provisions to ensure that no person can be evicted if they fulfil any of the following criteria: — if the tenant or a member of their family living in the relevant accommodation has a disability; — if the tenant or a member of their family living in the relevant accommodation has a terminal illness, a cancer diagnosis, has suffered a stroke, has advanced heart disease or suffers from poor mental health; — if the tenant or a member of their family living in the relevant accommodation is pregnant or has given birth in the last three years; and — if the tenant or a member of their family living in the relevant accommodation is over the age of 65 years". Peadar Tóibín (AON), Meath West Given that there is less than ten votes between the two sides, the gravity of this particular issue, and the fact that this amendment simply seeks to protect people with disabilities, people with very young families, older people, and people with terminal illnesses from eviction in ten days' time, under Standing Order 83(3)(b), I ask that the vote be taken by other than electronic means. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas.
