Social Welfare Code Dail Éireann — 2025-02-27 ============================================================ Seamus Healy (IND), Tipperary South In 2024, the Parliamentary Budget Office estimated the cost of abolishing the means test as €375.3 million, which is very similar to the figure Family Carers Ireland gave, of about €389 million. That is very small money in the scheme of things. The work of family carers ensures that people with disabilities can remain at home and do not have to take up expensive beds in hospitals or nursing homes. It is self-financing and there would be huge savings to the State from abolishing the means test. Doing so is necessary and urgent and will accrue great savings to the State. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas. Licensed under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).
