International Protection Bill 2026: Second Stage Seanad Éireann — 2026-03-03 ============================================================ Alice-Mary Higgins (IND), National University of Ireland -----a performative cruelty contest whereby we try to ensure that those fleeing situations of fear and terror are subjected to fear and difficulty when they are going through the immigration process. It was mentioned that we are unique. We are unique because we are a country that has the experience of being colonised and of sending millions of our own citizens abroad in situations of distress. Let us look to dignity, warmth and kindness in terms of how we receive people and not to a frame of management, performative cruelty or dissuasion. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas.
