Mineral Oil Tax: Financial Resolution Dail Éireann — 2026-08-28 ============================================================ Richard Boyd Barrett (PBP), Dún Laoghaire Fear of public outrage and protest has forced the Government to reconvene the Dáil. It is a pathetic admission by the Government that its policy has failed to provide any certainty or serious protection for ordinary people who are being hammered with the hikes in the costs of petrol and diesel. We can add to that electricity prices, gas prices, food prices and so many other things that are hammering people in their ability just to live from day to day. What should be in front of the Dáil today is something that would actually protect people from those price hikes. Let us not forget that these have been caused by Donald Trump's warmongering. That the Government is going to welcome the man responsible for these price hikes to the country in a couple of weeks is laughable. What should be in front of us are measures to control prices and address the profiteering. Protests caused the reconvening of the Dáil and protests are the way to get real relief for working people. That is why we will be mobilising for 19 September to put pressure on this Government to take serious action on the cost-of-living crisis that is blighting the lives of hundreds of thousands of working people, families and households in this country. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas.
