Mineral Oil Tax: Financial Resolution Dail Éireann — 2026-08-28 ============================================================ Roderic O'Gorman (GP), Dublin West The Dáil is sitting today to recognise the exceptional nature of the cost-of-living crisis being experienced by people all over our country. This crisis is driven by the increase in the cost of fossil fuels. Yet, in the measures being voted on today, there is not one proposal that will give long-term protection to Irish families from the international volatility in the cost of oil and gas. A huge investment of public money, €750 million, and not one cent of that will provide energy security in Irish homes. Last April, the Government voted one-off payments for heat pumps and electric vehicles but did nothing about it. In his speech minutes ago, the Tánaiste talked big about the need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels but in what we will vote on today, the Government does nothing about it. At what point is the Government going to move beyond soundbites and actually take meaningful steps? When will Irish households see the Government make solar panels more affordable, reduce the cost of an electric vehicle and deliver more retrofits for Irish homes? These are individual measures that would give households decades' worth of affordable energy and energy security. These are measures the Green Party has consistently fought for. When is the Government going to move beyond short-term thinking demonstrated by the measures we are voting on today and provide extra help so more Irish families can benefit from affordable and secure renewable energy? --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas.
