Mineral Oil Tax: Financial Resolution Dail Éireann — 2026-08-28 ============================================================ Richard O'Donoghue (II), Limerick County The reason we are here today is that the Government, backed up by a couple of Independent Members who keep voting with it, is taking a euro in tax on every litre of fuel. What does that do? It is a circular economy. Many depend on fossil fuel vehicles, which make up about 80% of the vehicles in this country. These taxes put up the price of food, materials and transport for everyone. The only realistic thing to do is to cap the taxation on fuel. If fuel costs increase, we will pay that increase, but we should not be taxed on it. It is not the cost of fuel that is the problem at the moment. It is the cost of tax. When it goes up, everything goes up. The infrastructure is not here. People cannot afford to go to work but people want them to buy EVs. They cannot afford to put food on the table. When that infrastructure is here, we will welcome it, but it is not here today. Cap the cost of fuel tax and we will pay the increased costs. That would save lives. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas. Licensed under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).
