Mineral Oil Tax: Financial Resolution Dail Éireann — 2026-08-28 ============================================================ Michael Healy-Rae (IND), Kerry I welcome the passing of this resolution in a very special way. At this time, we need to continue these supports as they are very important. If we look at the bigger picture and the future fuel needs of the country, the fact is that an awful lot of activity, including agricultural activity, is based in rural areas. So much needs to be moved around this island every day by large trucks and we do not have train or bus services on every road and in every town in the country. We have to look at the taxation of fuel because we pay too much tax and excise on the fuel that is used. It is aspirational for people to say that by 2030 or 2035, we will have removed our reliance on fossil fuels. That is not true. We will not be able to do that in as speedy a fashion as we might like. In future budgets, we have to recognise that people are paying too much tax and excise on the fuel that is required and which they need every day. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas.
