Heritage Schemes Dail Éireann — 2026-06-11 ============================================================ Charlie McConalogue (FF), Donegal I thank the Deputy for his question and his advocacy for this worthy project and his work on it. Significant progress has been made in advancing Ireland’s America250 programme, which is the State’s national commemorative initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence. It is being delivered across this year and 2027, and the programme is being supported by €200,000 in funding from my Department to ensure a fitting and meaningful series of commemorative events. The American Presidents trail is a key initiative within the programme. The Department is working closely with local authority partners to identify communities across the island with ancestral connections to former US Presidents, recognising the important contribution of Irish heritage to the American story. It is proposed that a native tree and interpretive information panel will mark the connection, creating a lasting legacy for local communities and visitors. A co-ordinated tree planting initiative is being developed as part of the trail. Significant progress has also been made on the literary legacies of the American presidents' trail. Two publications, one for a general audience and another for younger readers, will provide a more widely accessible form of the presidents trail. The general publication is scheduled for completion in advance of the 4 July anniversary, with the children’s edition expected in the autumn. Work is also continuing in partnership with the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland on the wider delivery of the America250 programme. All activity will be guided by the established principles of commemorations: respectful remembrance, historical authenticity, inclusivity and accessibility. The American Presidents trail will leave a lasting legacy, celebrating the contribution of Irish communities to the American story while delivering cultural, educational and tourism benefits. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas.
