Home Heating Oil (Emergency Mineral Oil Tax Reduction) Bill 2026: Second Stage [Private Members] Dail Éireann — 2026-09-22 ============================================================ Johnny Guirke (SF), Meath West Home-heating oil in Meath was an average €480 for 1,000 litres back in 2020. The average price this year is €1,330 for 1,000 litres with that price for 1,000 litres currently today at €1,649. Families across Meath are being hammered by massive increases week on week. People across Meath have been contacting me each week in shock at the huge jump in the price of home-heating oil and fuel for their vehicles. Seven months into the crisis and, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Independents have still not removed a single cent of excise or carbon tax from home-heating oil. Sinn Féin's proposal would save homeowners €183 on a fill of home-heating oil. People need to be able to heat their homes and this Government is removing any alternative to oil such as turf, another tradition taken away by this Government. Energy prices continue to rise with no action being taken once again by Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Independents. Energy companies make massive profits while households suffer. They dread to see their electricity bill come through the door. The cost-of-living crisis has hit many people in Ireland. People with disabilities and the elderly must choose between eating and heating. These people need heat in their homes all year round. Workers in Ireland have never worked so hard but had so little. Inflation has eaten away at any wage increases they may have got. Workers are worse-off now than they ever were before. The Government must take direct action to protect households. It has the chance to intervene and support Sinn Féin's Bill to reduce costs for people and families who are struggling. People in Meath need a government that has their back. Right now, it does not and it is not supporting workers, families and the people of Ireland. This is the eighth time Sinn Féin has brought forward proposals to cut the price of home-heating oil this year. At every opportunity the Government has voted against our proposals. People cannot afford to wait any longer. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas. Licensed under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).
