Middle East
I thank the Tánaiste for his response. I want to take the opportunity to make very clear my support for the Government's position in regard to the extension of the ceasefire and an outright cessation of hostile activities by the Israel Defense Forces, and a permanent solution to this ongoing intergenerational conflict. I will make it very clear in my own communications with the Israeli ambassador in Ireland that the response to barbarism is not more barbarism. Unfortunately, that is what has transpired over the las…

Policing, Protests and Public Order: Statements
I start by wishing the students, carers, teachers and parents of Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire well. I can only imagine they are suffering greatly due to this horrifying attack on Thursday lunchtime. I think of the little girl and her carer who remain in hospital, and hope their recovery is both swift and comfortable. I also mention the number of heroes who intervened, disarmed and removed the attacker. They were mostly immigrants, which I think is a sombre irony in what followed.
Parts of this debate have frankly bee…

Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements
I thank the Taoiseach for his response to my question. I put on the record my recognition of the importance of diplomacy, even with nations to which we are fundamentally opposed. It is incredibly important for the European Union to speak with one voice with regard to the humanitarian crisis unfolding before our eyes. What the Israelis are doing to innocent civilians in Gaza is shocking and appalling. It is not new, I regret to say; they have been doing it for decades. We are now, I suppose, in the fortunate positio…

Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage
I welcome the opportunity to speak on the Bill. I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Noonan, for being present. While we deal with important and significant legislation in the House every week, the Bill is prominent legislation that provides for the very nature of our work in these Houses and for the democracy to which most of us are committed. I pay particular tribute to the Electoral Commission for its work in preparing its constituency review report, which has informed not only the creation of the Bill but plen…

Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage
I have hundreds and hundreds of posters stockpiled in the outbuilding of a very nice friend in the north county. I hope I will be reusing them for years. I hope as well that the electorate will not mind me reusing posters with photos taken when I was around 26.

Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage
That being said, I think a limit would reduce the environmental impact and tick the box in terms of the programme for Government commitment, which I entirely respect. I thank the Ceann Comhairle for his forbearance.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation
I am reluctant to come into the House and raise the following issue again but unfortunately the numbers are going in the wrong direction. In the children's disability network team in my area of community healthcare organisation 9, the numbers are going in the wrong direction by 80, from 2,795 in June of this year to 2,873 as of the end of September. This means we have thousands of children waiting for assessment, never mind therapeutic support, which is an essential part of a child's capacity to access the educatio…

Finance (No. 2) Bill 2023: Second Stage (Resumed)
I very much appreciate the opportunity to participate in the debate on the Bill, which facilitates a range of significant and important changes to our taxation in a number of key areas. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the Minister, Deputy McGrath, on his first budget as Minister for Finance. He has stepped out of the Chamber but I am sure the Minister of State, Deputy Calleary, will pass it on. At its core, budget 2024 will result in people throughout the island of Ireland keeping more of their own …

Sports Facilities
Very briefly, for future large-scale sports infrastructure funds, I want to flag that the potential benefits that will be presented by the hosting of Euro 2028 for soccer will be immense. I ask the Minister of State to give careful consideration to the sort of investment that will be required in football clubs, particularly the stadia up and down the country that are in desperate need of investment. It is a wonderful opportunity, not for this round but for future capital investment.

Capital Support for Sports Facilities: Statements
The opportunity to speak on this matter is important. I thank the Minister of State for his contribution. I will start by talking about the importance of role models. Of course, we have had lots of mention of the Irish rugby team. There was mention earlier of the women's football team for their heroics during the summer. We also talked about Johnny Sexton in particular, and all that is due to him. However, I do not want to leave out Keith Earls because he is the second most prolific try scorer in the history of rug…

Capital Support for Sports Facilities: Statements
It is not just him. All of them are role models through the performance they put on for us, for boys and girls, and men and women up and down the country over the course of the summer in both tournaments. We could talk about Abbie and her exploits. We could talk about Kellie and her exploits. We could talk about Gavin Bazunu, Matt Doherty and Shane Duffy. Chiedozie Ogbene in particular is a role model for young black Irish children. Of course, Evan Ferguson is also coming through. There are so many. The Minister of…
