On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 718 of 722 decisive votes (3 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Confidence in Government: Motion

The great Kerry philosopher and writer John B. Keane once said a Kerry footballer with an inferiority complex is one who thinks he is just as good as everybody else. Now a Sinn Féin Deputy with an inferiority complex is one who thinks he will only top the poll and bring in one running mate. The polls and Sinn Féin's suggested popularity have gone to the heads of its Deputies. They crave an election. We can see it. They are mad to get out there and mad for power. It has gone to their heads. They have even introduced…

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation

The review of security of energy supply was originally due to be published in quarter 2. Replies to parliamentary questions have indicated it will now be quarter 3. Will the Minister advise whether a draft, briefing or any version of this review has been received? Will it be published any time soon? It is very important for the country. It is critically important now more than ever in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the uncertainty that creates in regard to energy supplies.

Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Bill 2022 [Seanad]: Second Stage

I echo the words of my colleague, Deputy Carroll MacNeill, on the Bill. I very much welcome it, I commend the Minister of State, Deputy English, and the Tánaiste on bringing forward the legislation and I thank everyone who has been involved in the process to date. It is very important legislation and gives more fairness not only to the workers in the industry but also to customers who will now know exactly what will happen to their tips. As someone who worked for many years in the hospitality sector and who was qui…

Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence

This question relates to the implementation plan for the Third National Strategy on Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence 2022-2026. I ask that the Minister might outline to the House her plans in this regard and provide as much detail as she can on how this will improve on the previous strategies.

Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence

I thank the Minister for her very comprehensive response. I congratulate and commend her on the approach she has taken together with the attention she has given to this particular matter since her first day in the job. It is very encouraging to see the Minister very much applying herself to moving this particular issue forward. I also acknowledge the contribution of the former Ministers, Frances Fitzgerald and Deputy Flanagan. It is fitting that the former Minister of State, Deputy Stanton, is here for this discuss…

Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence

Further to the education piece, as the Minister said in her opening comments, it is important that age-appropriate education would be provided to children in this regard. I am somewhat concerned that the Department of Education seems to be moving very slowly in this regard. I know the Minister has put considerable work into this and she passionately believes in it. I feel that her efforts might be undermined by the Department of Education not being as enthusiastic in trying to progress matters as quickly as she is.…

I ask the Minister to update the House on her work to legislate against hate crimes.

Proposed Legislation

I commend the Minister on her work on this. This is very reforming legislation. It is something that is needed, unfortunately, perhaps even more in 2022 than ever. It was needed in the past and it is great that it is finally about to become reality. Most of us will never know what it is like to be a victim of hate crime, but the appalling incidents we have seen in recent times remind us all that this is necessary. This cannot ever be tolerated in a civilised society. Within our community, unfortunately the victims …

Tax Code

The cost of living in Ireland is a massive hardship for so many families and the cost of motoring is proving particularly difficult. The Minister of State will be aware that as she drives around the country that the price of fuel in the forecourts has rocketed in recent months. It could be between €2.10 or €2.20 for a litre of diesel or petrol in most places. This is hitting people hard in the pocket. I very much welcome the intervention to date on the cost of fuel. Without that excise reduction delivered some mont…

Tax Code

I thank the Minister of State for her reply. I emphasise that I am clearly not talking about motor tax abolition; I am talking about giving a break to motorists at the moment in respect of a Government charge on an activity that is already heavily taxed and is already extremely expensive because of a number of factors, many of which are outside the control of the Government. While I am not talking about abolition, I am talking about giving people a bit of breathing space for a limited period because motorists are a…

Offences against the State (Amendment) Act 1998: Motion (Resumed)

Given the very high level of abstentions on the division on this very important matter relating to the Special Criminal Court, I call for a vote on the amendment other than by electronic means. A huge proportion of the Members of this Parliament have abstained on a vote concerning the Special Criminal Court.
