On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 718 of 722 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

I move amendment No. 1: To delete all words after “That Seanad Éireann:” and substitute the following: “notes that: - the Minister for Social Protection has published a Green Paper on Reform of Disability Income Support payments for public consultation to provide an opportunity for disabled people and disabled people’s representative organisations an opportunity to input to the shape of future reforms to welfare payments for people with disabilities; - the Green Paper is a consultation paper only that outlines one …

Cancer Services

I welcome the Minister of State. October is breast cancer awareness month, which is why I want to highlight this important matter. The importance of investing in the facilitation of breast cancer, BRCA, gene testing and the consequential support for those who receive a positive result is an issue that not only affects individuals but also entire families. We must strive to empower women and men to prioritise their health and well-being, and support them on what can be an incredibly difficult journey. The BRCA gene …

Cancer Services

I thank the Minister of State for his response. I acknowledge that the Minister and Ministers of State with responsibility for health said they were unavailable this morning, and I got a nice email from them. The steering group is important. It is very welcome that €2.7 million has been made available for the implementation of the strategy. I will keep advocating for the women on the ground who are worried about a family history of breast cancer and do not know whether they are BRCA gene-positive and whether they c…

An tOrd Gnó (Atógáil) - Order of Business (Resumed)

In the week coming up to the budget, I call for the Leader to make representations on behalf of this House on the need for a strong agricultural budget. We need a budget that supports sustainable food production and the 150,000 farming families we have in the country. We must also put funding into creating that carbon balance sheet for every single farm, to ensure farmers know what they are emitting and what their land is sequestrating. It is important that farmers know what is on their balance sheet. We have the t…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I want to welcome the main man, Gerry McGreehan, my dad, to the Seanad. It is a nice day for me to see my father sitting in the Visitors Gallery. I want to highlight a local issue and then a budget issue. I note the end of an era. Seamus Murphy and Sons, a local petrol station that had been in business since 1959, closed on Saturday. Seamus senior, Niall and Seán have served the community of north Louth very well. I want to wish them and their family the very best of luck. They received a wonderful send-off from th…

Road Safety: Statements

It is an opportune time to speak about this very important issue. Unfortunately, the reason we are bringing this to the fore in this Chamber is the serious number of road casualties on our roads this year. The Minister of State said there were 136 fatalities. I express my deepest condolences to those families and all the people who have lost their lives on the roads this year. I think of my friend Caroline White, who was killed by a drunk and reckless driver in 2000. There is barely a day when I do not think about …

Crime and Policing: Motion

The Minister is very welcome to the House. I thank her for coming in because as she well knows, this is a very important motion. It is important for us as a House to absolutely give her all our support to ensure we have effective policing on our streets and supports for our Garda Síochána. There has been an increase in crime and antisocial behaviour throughout the country. We have seen the highlighted examples that make the media, but every week in local towns and areas, as we saw last week in Senator Cassells' are…

Youth Work Supports

I welcome the Minister of State to the Seanad. What I raise today is a passion for youth work and clubs, and it is something I am interested in. I volunteer at Cooley Youth Club, and I am looking forward to that starting up in the coming weeks. I have learned about funding from engaging with Youth Work Ireland and with Caroline Flanagan, who does incredible work in Dundalk and all around County Louth. It is about getting dedicated and earmarked funding for youth work and youth workers. We need to celebrate that as …

Youth Work Supports

I cannot disagree with anything the Minister of State said in her speech. I want to highlight that there is a level of bureaucracy that comes from the ETB and someone has to be picked to deal with this. I want a national framework for clarity. Each ETB deals with things differently. I know it is a localised base, but really the people on the ground know. There is not a uniformity across the country. There has to be a flexibility within that but there is no uniformity across the country. Each youth work organisation…

Disability (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2023: Second Stage

The Minister of State is very welcome to the House this evening. First, I thank Senator Clonan for bringing this Bill to the House. Every opportunity we get to speak about disability and disability rights in this House is positive and important. Given the week that is in it, I am very glad we have this opportunity, because it is the final week, and we are speaking about our budget priorities, what changes we want and what type of attitude we want in budget 2024. We regularly call on the Joint Committee on Disabilit…

Health Services

I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach, and the Minister of State is very welcome to the Chamber today. I wish to discuss the investment into community rehabilitation teams across the country, but more specifically with regard to my own community health organisation, CHO, 8, which County Louth is part of. As the Minister of State knows, CHO 8 represents Laois, Offaly, Longford, Westmeath, Louth and Meath. It has a population of 592,388. There are no local teams, as far as I am aware, to support patients who are really in …

I would almost cede my time to the Minister of State because what she is doing is incredibly impressive, as is across all her brief. The Minister of State, Deputy Rabbitte, has always had her hand on the pulse of what is going on at a local level and national level regarding disability care, neuro teams, and all of that. I am scrambling to take notes on all of what she has been doing over the past couple of months and I will continue the conversation, and my scribbling, during her next contribution.
