On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 305 of 309 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Report on Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Ireland's Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Motion

I probably will not need the whole eight minutes, but I do want to contribute to this debate. The Minister is welcome to the House and I thank her for being here. I acknowledge my party colleague, Deputy Niamh Smyth, and Senator Carrigy. It is obviously a very well put together report. It involved State agencies, union groups, academics and others, including the sector, on issues affecting workers and their wages. It is important that we have this debate and that we speak about this. It is important that we ensure …

Welfare and Safety of Workers in the Public Health Service: Motion

I thank everybody for their contributions. I will call the Minister in a moment, before we return to Senator Hoey, as the Labour Party proposed this motion. Among others, I have been talking about all front-line workers in recent weeks, including gardaí, nursing staff and teachers. For a number of years, we have let things drag on. I do not think there is one person, on whichever side of the House, who is not worried at the moment. We are all worried. I know it is also of concern to the Minister, who I thank for be…

Senator Gavan, I am not going to tolerate this interruption.

The Senator made an accusation. Anybody is entitled to answer, so please allow the Minister to answer. Minister, please respond.

I would prefer if the Minister did not use the word "liar" about anybody. I would prefer if he did not use it. I do not think he should have used it but I am not allowing this debate to go any further.

We will suspend as the Minister has to go and vote. He has offered to come back and give a full response to the debate with the agreement of the House.

I thank the Minister very much for that comprehensive reply. I compliment Senator Hoey and her colleagues for bringing forward this important motion. I also thank all the Senators who contributed to this debate. We all fully support it. I call Senator Hoey to sum up.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I want to raise an issue I have spoken about before. It is the national primary route, the N5, and the Dublin to Westport route and particularly the bypass between Ballaghaderreen and Scramoge, which has been a danger to the public for many years. Industry also has been complaining that when transporting goods from the west to the east to the ports, a lot of material in trucks gets damaged. We got the go-ahead a year and a half ago for that €200 million project. Unfortunately, because of the war the company that go…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

With no disrespect to the comments of Senator Gavan, he should not throw across the floor that other parties do not attend. I know from our own situation that we have unions at our parliamentary party meetings and we have private meetings. We are very aware of this situation and I know what the Senator is talking about. Other parties, particularly Fianna Fáil, do take part in this and they have done quite a lot for workers down through the years. With regard to anything related to workers who are not being treated …

It is inaccurate. It has been thrown around.
