On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 1,098 of 1,109 decisive votes (2 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Departmental Reports

As I noted in my opening remarks, it is paramount we ensure that whatever co-ordination structure is put in place in Drogheda links in with the Government's wider approach to community development and community safety. The Department has developed a policy on community safety which has informed the general scheme of the policy and community safety Bill, which proposes local community safety partnerships to ensure co-ordination on safety issues at a local authority level. In addition, we are working with the Departm…

Sports Funding

I apologise on behalf of the Minister of State with responsibility for sport, Deputy Chambers, and the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Deputy Catherine Martin, who are caught at a Cabinet meeting and unfortunately cannot be here. I thank the Senator for raising this very important matter. We are acutely aware of the importance of sports capital grants to our local communities. The sports capital and equipment programme is the primary vehicle for Government support for the developmen…

Sports Funding

It would appear that perhaps there has been a misinterpretation of the Senator's proposal. I take the Senator's point that the intention is not to prohibit future applications. As I understand it, current applications will remain valid for the next round of funding, so that organisations do not have to go through the entire process of reapplying in that situation. I will certainly bring the additional points to the attention of the Minister of State, Deputy Chambers. I will ask the Minister of State if perhaps a re…

Criminal Justice (Perjury and Related Offences) Bill 2018 [Seanad]: Report and Final Stages

Deputy Naughten has proposed the two interrelated technical amendments regarding the placement of section 1 of this Bill and the non-application provision in respect of section 21(3) of the Civil Law and Criminal Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2020, which relates to the statements of truth. Taken together, the effect of these two amendments would be to delete the application element from section 1 of the Bill and move it into a new and separate section 2. There will be no change to the wording. While I understa…

Criminal Justice (Perjury and Related Offences) Bill 2018 [Seanad]: Report and Final Stages

I thank Deputy Canney for his contribution and for not pressing the amendments. I take his point, which is a stylistic one. I would like to be associated with his comments thanking former Senator Ó Céidigh for introducing and pursuing this very important Bill. I acknowledge Mr. Ó Céidigh's significant contribution.

Personal Insolvency (Amendment) Bill 2020 [Seanad]: Committee and Remaining Stages

Deputy Fitzpatrick's amendment refers to section 102 of the principal Act. Currently, this provision would allow a personal insolvency practitioner to propose that the principal amount outstanding on a mortgage should be reduced by a certain sum if the borrower grants a share of his or her equity in the secure property to the secure creditor. The effect of the Deputy's amendment is to specify that the proposal would be made without the agreement of the secure creditor concerned. I appreciate the Deputy's intentions…

Counterfeiting Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages

The amendment proposes a change to the paragraph and sub-paragraph numbering in section 29 of the Bill, which is an amendment to the Criminal Justice Act 1994. The amended numbering is required because the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) (Amendment) Act 2021 was recently enacted and commenced and section 9 of the Act also amends the relevant provisions. The amendment is necessary in the context of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.
