On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 1,035 of 1,042 decisive votes (3 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Commemorative Events

I am grateful. I presume the impetus for that came from the Minister. It is 15 years later. Key figures from NGOs and other organisations are often involved. A constituent of mine, Mr. Michael Blanch, has been a strong advocate of famine commemoration. He will be delighted to hear that the plaque will finally be placed in the Custom House. A plaque is installed to mark the site of the commemoration each year. He also made the point to me that responsibility for all national commemorative days and events is located …

Commemorative Events

I am heartened to know that a constituency colleague has an equal interest in this. The Deputy has probably more access to the Minister than I would have. Those were fairly comprehensive responses, particularly in relation to the commemorative plague. The Minister will agree 15 years is a long time to wait but I am grateful that she, as Minister, has ensured that it is finally happening. It will be appreciated.

Planning Issues

I will not repeat what my colleague said, but perhaps I can add some additional points. As a public representative, when I was in conversation with a few residents from Kingswood Heights recently, I came across five of these masts in a very small geographical space. I became more conscious of masts, including very close to where I live. One of the things we need to know is the purpose of these masts. Why are they required? What are they used for? This is not to do away with the fact that we recognise the need for t…

Planning Issues

I will not repeat points already made. Unfortunately, legislation going through the House is not going to have any impact on what has happened in Kingswood or other areas. I thank the Minister of State for his replies to the matters submitted by my two colleagues and me. There are four points I want to make. Can the Minister of State clarify whether anybody has an appeal before An Bord Pleanála? I presume work must be stopped if there is an appeal against the planning permission. Why is the work ongoing? According …

Safe Deposit Boxes and Related Deposits Bill 2022: Second Stage [Private Members]

For 250 years, or two and a half centuries if we go back to the earliest deposit box referred to by Deputy Ó Cuív, these boxes have lain undiscovered, unmoved and untouched, by and large, possibly along with other items, including works of art, maps, documents or larger items. The Bill proposes, in a very sensitive, legitimate and legally safeguarded way, to enable this generation to go back not earlier than 80 years to open them to see what they hold. Every so often, to echo what the Chair said, someone has a brai…

School Accommodation

I support the Minister. We can focus on the discussions but I heard the Minister repeat continuously that those negotiations and discussions are going positively. Deputy Ó Ríordáin knows about the tictacking that necessarily goes on between Departments. I look at my constituency of Dublin South-West and the projects needed there, including Gaelscoileanna like Gaelscoil Chnoc Liamhna, which we were waiting for 25 years and which the Minister has delivered. Another six or seven school projects have opened during the …

Special Educational Needs

I wish to ask the Minister if she will develop a centralised application system to schools for children with autism spectrum disorder, ASD, and additional needs. If she is in a position to do so, will she comment on pilots that exist in this space already and make a statement on the matter?

Special Educational Needs

I thank the Minister of State. There is a lot of food for thought. As the Minister of State knows, the scarcity of ASD places and other places for children with additional needs and special classes, notwithstanding improvements, which I wish to acknowledge, places huge financial, psychological and other unnecessary stresses on parents who are already stretched as parents of children with additional needs. I think the Minister of State will agree that the burden of application should not fall exclusively on the pare…

Special Educational Needs

I detect quite a lot of movement. I met the Tallaght Parents Autism Support Group recently, who are grouped together because they all have children with autism. Often, they find they are applying to the same schools for their children. They are disciplined and resilient enough not to fall into the awful trap of competitiveness with each other if there is a place available. If there was a centralised application system along the lines I am talking about and the Minister of State is gesturing towards, it would mean t…

Schools Building Projects

I thank the Ceann Comhairle for affording me the opportunity to raise this matter and I thank the Minister of State, Deputy O'Donnell, for his presence. It is very much appreciated. This Government has a very good record with regard to school construction and building, not least in my own constituency of Dublin South-West. I can point to a number of schools that have been built and completed in the lifetime of this Government. They include Kingswood Community College in Tallaght, which is a state-of-the-art communi…
