On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 66 of 66 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I hope it does not rain at least. I wish the day to be celebrated in an appropriate manner. As Senator Currie pointed out, when people celebrate culture, they should not try to denigrate the culture of others. I have seen the posters and our national flag on the bonfires. That is not celebrating anybody's culture. I imagine that is the very opposite of what many people in the unionist community think is celebrating their culture. Senator Currie is correct that they need to speak out to say that does not represent a…

Visit of US Delegation

Before we move on, I welcome to the Distinguished Visitors Gallery from Senator Ed Markey's office, his State director, Mr. Jim Cantwell. Jim, you are most welcome, along with Christopher and Raymond. I am sure if you hand out your telephone number you will have loads of people with visa queries: I would run out of the Chamber as fast as I could. I thank you for coming here today.

Report of the Joint Committee on Key Issues Affecting the Traveller Community: Motion

I want to get everybody in. As Senators know, we started a little late because of the legislative programme. The Minister is supposed to respond at 4.45 p.m. but he might give us some latitude on that. Before I call the next speaker, I welcome to the Gallery Councillor Yemi Adenuga, one of the first elected representatives from a minority community in Ireland. It is appropriate she is here for this debate. I also welcome Councillor Baby Pereppadan. I thank him for being here for this very important debate on making…

Report of the Joint Committee on Key Issues Affecting the Traveller Community: Motion

As we will run out of time, I ask Senators to limit their contributions to three or four minutes. The Minister is due to respond.

Report of the Joint Committee on Key Issues Affecting the Traveller Community: Motion

I join with Senator Black in congratulating Senator Flynn on her work in putting this report together. Its findings are disturbing. As Senator Black pointed out in her contribution, while the previous reports, which are nearly 60 years old, identified much of this discrimination, they played down what was going on when there was endemic discrimination at the level of the State. I again thank Senator Flynn for her very significant work. As the Senator and the rest of us know, writing reports is one thing but, while …

I have to inform those sitting in the Public Gallery that their intervention is not appreciated and is not allowed under the rules of the House. When the question is being put, the question is being put. Those are the rules of the House. When the debate is on, the debate is on. I ask people to show respect for each other during the debate but also when we are putting the question. Members cannot use language. I am not even saying-----

Higher Education Authority Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed)

I ask Members to treat the House and each other with respect and dignity. I know it is a debate and people are passionate about it, as they should be, but when we are dealing with the rules of the House and procedures, people are not observing them. I am trying to implement them as best I can, but I can only do that if people observe them when they are asked to do so. I am suspended the House for five minutes.
