On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 66 of 66 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Good Friday Agreement: Motion

That is not a point of order. The Senators who proposed the motion are entitled to wrap up the debate, as Senator Ó Donnghaile is aware, but if he wants any guidance on points of order in the future the Senator can give me a call later.

Gnó an tSeanaid - Business of Seanad

Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit, Deputy Frankie Feighan. I thank him for coming in today. Before he addresses the first matter I will read out the matters submitted by Senators today. I have received notice from Senator Malcolm Byrne that, on the motion for the Commencement of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter: The need for the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media to make a statement on her plans for the safe reopening of theatres and event venues. I have also r…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

Anois, leading off for the Independent Group is Senator Rónán Mullen. Before you begin, I express my condolences to you and to all the Mullen family on the sad passing of your father.

Gabhaim buíochas. I call now the leader of the Sinn Fein grouping, Senator Ó Donnghaile.

I thank the Senator for raising that issue. I was with the Senator in Belfast for the Ballymurphy inquest. It is shocking that it has taken so long for inquests to take place into so many killings in Northern Ireland. For anyone to act unilaterally against an agreement between two sovereign states would be "beyond the pale", to use another phrase. I call Senator Ruane, the whip for the Civil Engagement Group.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I thank the Senator for raising that issue. I know it is a local issue, but it is an important one. It might be a matter the Senator could raise as a Commencement matter for the Minister to answer.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I thank the Leader. Senator Boyhan is not able to attend today's sitting but he asked me to remind everybody that it is Guide Dog Day. He wanted us to thank, as I do on behalf of the Seanad and Senator Boyhan, all the volunteers around the country who are raising funds for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind to assist it in its efforts to provide independent mobility and dignity for services users. All charities are struggling at this time to raise funds and we thank all the volunteers for their work. Senator Marie Sher…

Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I have received notice from Senator Aisling Dolan that, on the motion for the Commencement of the House today, she proposes to raise the following matter: The need for the Minister for Education to provide an update on the delivery of the equality of opportunity on schools, DEIS, resource allocation system and the timeline for its completion, publication and implementation. I have also received notice from Senator Timmy Dooley of the following matter: The need for the Minister for…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

Koningsdag, or King's Day, is the national holiday in the Netherlands, celebrating the birth of King Willem-Alexander. On Koningsdag the Dutch turn their country orange in the same way we turn the world green on our national day. The friendship between the Irish and the Dutch is long and enduring. Together we have worked closely to protect our citizens and our countries from the impact of Brexit. The Irish Embassy in The Hague was opened in 1950, with one of the first female ambassadors anywhere in the world, Josep…

I thank the Senator and join with him in his kind words about Andrew Geary. I know Andrew Geary quite well because he championed the Irish Sign Language recognition Bill on behalf of his son - and I mean championed it. It is not acceptable that, 100 years and more after the Proclamation referred to "cherishing all the children of the nation equally", the Senator, Andrew Geary and many others have to fight for their children to have equal access to education and services. I thank the Senator for his kind words about…
