On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 125 of 781 decisive votes (6 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Driver Test

That is a pathetic reply. It is no wonder the Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, or the Minister of State, Deputy Naughton, would not come into the House and read it out. Have the Government Ministers and the RSA board a brain among them? That board is arrogant and out of control. It cares nothing about young people, old people or anybody. It is outrageous that this is the answer we get. Why was it not possible to have some kind of imagination and make some effort to facilitate people? It is only wait, wait, wait and dis…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I am sorry to have to raise this today. I am looking for a debate on the whole situation around driving licences, theory tests and driving tests. We hope to have our economy recovering. There are legions of people, young and old, trying to get theory tests, lessons and driving tests. Something must be done. I raised it with the Tánaiste here last week and he promised action but no actions have been taken. We must have a debate on this issue because it is so important for people in education and people in the health…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

As we talk about the reopening of our hospitality sector, I would like to ask the Taoiseach what he has against the small or even the big family-run pub business. The illogical description of a pub as a "wet pub" was horrible. Fáilte Ireland said it did not come up with it. I do not know who did but it has been banished. Are we now going to further discriminate against publicans where they cannot apply for grants for outdoor seating? Surely every pub, whether it serves food or not, should be able to apply for fundi…

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation

There is a significant issue with regard to theory tests, driving lessons and driving tests being unavailable. This is causing large backlogs in many sectors of industry. This is very important for young people who wish to train as paramedics and nurses and who want to drive to college. They want to get their lessons, get on the road and play their part in the recovery of our economy. Something has to be done because the backlog is enormous and the delays relating to it are lengthy. I salute the driving instructors…

European Union Regulation: Motion

I am pleased to speak on this motion. While we all want a stronger police force and stronger supports for Interpol, we have to be careful that we do not sign up to something that erodes our status in Europe. We have so many ideas. The document provided by the Commission to member states on 5 March past was sizeable and covers many issues. The purpose is to enable Europe to co-operate effectively with private parties. We are all for that. It will also enable Europol to process large, complex data sets and strengthen…

National Marine Planning Framework: Motion

This is shameful. It is interesting that this went through the Seanad without debate yet we had a Business Committee meeting this morning and they want more sitting time and to sit the days we are sitting. They are sitting in our Chamber and they are kicking up míle murder. There is a meeting this evening to try to sort it out. Yet none of them saw fit to discuss this vital issue. Some 75% of our population live adjacent to the sea and it is so important to us. This comes after what happened with the Brexit talks, …

National Autism Empowerment Strategy: Motion [Private Members]

I too compliment Páirtí an Lucht Oibre on tabling the motion. I wish the Minister of State well, but anybody who tries to help on the issue of autism knows there are some shocking figures in this area, as I learned when studying the issue. The State has recently spent more than €8,000 on consultants and advisers from Deloitte and other companies but there are 5,018 people waiting for an assessment. The trauma, stress, anxiety, fear and desperation that parents go through with autistic children - some families have …

Residential Tenancies (Student Rents and Other Protections) (Covid-19) Bill 2021: Second Stage [Private Members]

I too thank Sinn Féin and support this Bill wholeheartedly. I must declare an interest as I have a dalta óg, a first year who has passed and flew through it. The money was taken from people of a Friday evening but what happened that very night or the morning after was really selfish and degrading. Many students and their families struggle to make this money and the costs are not cheap. They put it together but then, that weekend, they were told there would be no on-campus tuition and they would be working from home…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I wish to speak on the same issue. I have been contacted by taxi drivers from Tipperary who planned to come to Dublin in their cars tomorrow. They have been wiped out by the "condemic". It might be an unusual step for us to raise this here but these are unusual times. Are we living in a totally totalitarian state whereby we cannot protest safely in cars? This is unbelievable. We saw what happened in County Longford at the weekend in a church. It is disgraceful. Are we going back to the time of Hitler and the Nazis?…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I understood this was Thursday's business so I was waiting for that, but as the issue has been taken now, I will speak on it. I wrote to the Ceann Comhairle objecting to this motion being rammed through without debate. Now there is a miserly five minutes for each group. This motion is too important for that. It sends out all the wrong signals to people looking in at how we do business in this House. Like other speakers, I ask that the motion be withdrawn and we have the framework looked at by the committee. The mat…

Planning and Development, Heritage and Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage

Hope springs eternal. I hope the Ceann Comhairle will get a night in Hanora's Cottage before the year is out, which is in the lovely and famed Nire Valley, just across the boundary from me.
