Mortgage Interest Relief Scheme: Motion [Private Members]
I compliment Sinn Féin on bringing forward this motion. This motion should not be necessary and the Ministers should have the heart and the empathy with the people to support them. These are hard-working people who are carrying the weight of the bank bailout. I called it the bank cleanout at the time. What happened at the time was daylight robbery. All those bankers and bondholders had insurance bonds and were never even touched and were doubly covered. The weight of that then was put down on ordinary people. Now, …

Address by H.E. Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament
Cuirim fáilte roimh an Uachtarán Metsola go dtí an Teach. I also say to her that we have had benefits from the EU. We have also inherited many problems. Mention has been made of housing and the troika and the damage they left behind. A trail of terror has been blazed by vulture funds and the banks in this country on ordinary householders and small businesses.
We also have the situation regarding the Paris Agreement green deal of 2015, which is outdated at this stage. It is a goal we cannot continue with because it …

It is the usual. This Parliament is becoming very regressive. People with an alternative view have no place here. Deputy Murphy and his colleagues then lecture other people on what they should do. I am entitled to represent my group and my views here, a Cheann Comhairle-----.

-----if that is possible. We have sniggers and insults across the floor. It is disgusting behaviour that has crept in from those who will not tolerate anything.
A situation is also being forced on us in respect of the refugee crisis. We are "Ireland of the thousand welcomes", of course, but the problem is the management of that welcome and of inward migration, and the undocumented people who have arrived here. There is a lack of both information and a cohesive plan. We saw it in Lismore this week and it could be in…

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation
I raise the very serious backlogs for testing of routine samples at University Hospital Waterford, UHW. The current waiting time is approximately 20 weeks for non-urgent histology cases. When I raised this matter with the Minister for Health and the HSE, the response stated that the demand on histology services at UHW far exceeds the capacity. UHW also claims it has an ever-increasing workload, with rises in complex cancer cases. We need to get more resources in there. I have a number of constituents who are 20 wee…

Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Bill 2022: Second Stage (Resumed)
Tá siad imithe. Déanfaidh mé mo dhícheall. I congratulate the Minister on his appointment. It is a temporary appointment, for good reason. I wish the Minister, Deputy McEntee, all the best in her future. It is a wonderful and joyous occasion for her and I hope it all goes well.
The general scheme of the Bill contained the objective of providing a legal basis for law enforcement use of body cameras, along with other recording devices such as mobile phones. The proposal would also expand the use of CCTV footage and A…

Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Bill 2022: Second Stage (Resumed)
Okay, but it is happening under our eyes. It is happening in the Chair's county too, and mine. It was gardaí in the Chair's county who tried to get me locked up. Anyway, I know some Members here might like to see me locked up. Thanks be to God, everybody here has a good name.
This legislation is worrying as well as everything else. The Irish Council for Civil Liberties, ICCL, along with six academics working in the area, wrote an open letter to the Minister for Justice in November noting the use of facial recogniti…

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation
We have debates going on about what went on in Cabinet, who knew what and what was in who's brief. These are historic debates but I am asking about a current issue, the sale by Coillte to Gresham House. The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Deputy McConalogue, says it is not the Government's preferred option. Will the Taoiseach take the opportunity on Thursday to talk to President Metsola about the rules of engagement on grants paid down to Coillte? Will he also deal with Coillte and the way it is mist…

Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages
I have the same reservations as Deputy Funchion. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. Do we ever learn from our mistakes? The Caranua experience was an unmitigated disaster. I do not think the Minister was involved in setting that up - he was not even here at the time - but it was a disaster. Surely we should learn but we are going back to it. In the last couple of days, the Mail on Sunday broke the story about the nursing homes, the charges and the fees. Several…

Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages
I support amendment No. 27 in the name of Deputy Tóibín and the other amendments. As my colleague, Deputy Funchion, said, how long is a piece of string? There is a lack of clarity. We have had sad experiences with most elements of our public system now. That extends even to getting a passport or a driving licence, which are totally mundane issues compared with the seriousness of what we are dealing with tonight. There is the impact on people's lives and the age profile of the survivors. The Bill is just not fit for…
