On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 19 of 375 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Safe Access to Termination of Pregnancy Services Bill 2021: Committee Stage

Absolutely. The specific issue Senator Mullen raised was in relation to University of Limerick Hospitals Group and its statement. I have nothing to apologise for. I have no reason to correct the record of the House because what the hospitals group said was that it did not record any complaints. We know a great number of complaints were made - indeed, the people in the Chamber today are witnesses to those complaints. Therefore, there is no need for me to correct the record of the House. I must say on the record that…

Safe Access to Termination of Pregnancy Services Bill 2021: Committee Stage

-----I have never accused anyone in this Chamber of telling lies. I am disgusted such a charge was made against me today. The Minister can see what is happening here. It again emphasises the importance of working with the Bill. We have just 40 minutes left in this debate. This is what we will all face unless we collectively come together and work this Bill through to its conclusion and deliver what we need to in order to protect women and pregnant people approaching hospitals today across the State. Let us get goin…

I appreciate everything that Senator Higgins has said. I acknowledge the fact that she is going to withdraw those amendments. That is absolutely fine. The points she makes are very important but under the Interpretation Act 1937 we are actually covered already in regard to that. To reiterate to the Minister in regard to amendment No. 2, we are pleased to see that moved but we are open to further discussion in regard to that issue, so that we can tease it out together and happily revisit it on Report Stage if necess…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I raise the issue of childcare workers. The most recent SIPTU survey was quite shocking. It was an extensive survey of 10% of workers in the sector. Some 66% of childcare workers earn less than the living wage. Perhaps more shocking is the fact that managers are paid less than €15 an hour in many cases. Some 42% of managers earn less than €15 an hour. Imagine how hard it is to be a manager in a childcare or early education centre. That is all we are paying them. That tells me the model is fundamentally flawed. Sinn…

Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person (Amendment) (Stalking) Bill 2021: Report and Final Stages

I am standing in for my colleague, Senator Ó Donnghaile, today. I will begin by congratulating Senator Chambers. I agree with everything she said about this being a very good day for this House. It is a very significant Bill. Before I speak to the Bill specifically, I will commend the makers of Monday night's "RTÉ Investigates" programme. It was a powerful, disturbing and very frightening revelation of what life is like for women who are brutalised by their husbands or partners and how they are let down by the Stat…

Uyghur Tribunal: Motion

I welcome the Minister of State. The last time a motion was before the Seanad regarding the treatment of the Uyghur people by the Chinese Government, my colleague, Senator Ó Donnghaile, spoke clearly and directly on this matter. Unfortunately, he is unable to be with us this week and he has asked me to step in. I will reiterate what he said on that last occasion. Sinn Féin is deeply concerned about reports of the treatment of the Uyghur minority in China. Those reports are very concerning and warrant urgent attenti…

Personal Injuries Assessment Board (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage

It is good to see the Minister of State. Sinn Féin welcomes this evening's Bill. It seeks to criminalise the giving of false information to the Personal Injuries Assessment Board under section 11, which relates to the making of assessments, and section 23, which gives the board the power to require additional information from third parties, of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003, the establishing Act for the body. Sinn Féin supports strengthening the role of PIAB as it allows for cheaper and quicker set…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I want to raise the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland's report into 27 loyalist murders and attempted murders in south Belfast between 1990 and 1998. As the House knows, this report comes on the back of previous reports into loyalist killings in south Down and the north west and is further evidence of a systematic policy of collusion between state forces and loyalist death squads. My thoughts this afternoon are with the families of the 11 people murdered, including a 15-year-old boy, and all those injured as a …
