On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 194 of 196 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Animal Health and Welfare and Forestry (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Second Stage

I thank everyone for their input to this important Bill. It has had two very different Titles, relating to fur farming and the native woodland scheme. It is good that there is a Minister of State in the House who has worked on this Bill. She is one of our own, a Senator. I invite her now to make her concluding remarks.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

Guím Lá Fhéile Bríde sona ar gach duine anseo. Is é sin an Lá Fhéile Bríde deireanach nach mbeidh lá saoire poiblí againn. Finally we will have a public day of recognition for the first female saint in Ireland. It is about time because, to be honest, we are all saints. We need a lot of patience. I am sure I wreck some people's heads. I will give as good as I get. It is good that we acknowledge the day. This brings me to something about which I feel very strongly. It came up during the week in the newspapers. I than…

Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Bill 2022: Second Stage

Cuirim fáilte romhat, a Leas-Chathaoirligh, and happy St. Brigid's Day. It is good that we are springing into action on this very important Bill. I welcome the work that the Tánaiste has done on this legislation. I agree with the phrase that once a waitress, always a waitress. Even now when I eat out with people I cannot help stacking the plates and wiping the table. I have worked as a waitress in Germany, America and Ireland, and waitressing has gotten me through certain stages of my life. I always remember the bu…

I thank the Tánaiste. There was a lot to cover. It was like a theorem, having good functional points. Well done.

Broadband Roll-out: Statements

I will not need the full eight minutes. Tá an tAire Stáit ag obair go dian ar an bhfadhb seo. Is dúshlán mór é atá ann le fada an lá ach, faoi dheireadh, tá rudaí ag tarlú agus tá sé ag bogadh ar aghaidh. I thank the Minister of State for taking on this role. I know he has been working immensely hard on it. We have had repeated meetings with NBI to see how we can get the entire process speeded up. I see we are now reaching targets beyond those originally set. I take my hat off to the Minister of State. Despite Covi…

Schools Building Projects

I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Feighan, for coming into the Chamber today. Fortunately, we cannot shoot the messenger. The Minister of State is not the Minister for Education but I will go for it anyway. In light of what we know from the pandemic - we knew that ventilation was important way before the pandemic anyway - and the importance of ventilation for public health, I asked that the Minister for Education make a statement committing to the installation of a whole-school ventilation system in both the ne…

Schools Building Projects

The Minister of State indicated there is a natural ventilation strategy for the school. Does that just mean the use of windows? An air-to-water system is what is needed. Let us not mess around with words. Gas is a fossil fuel. Let us not pretend there is such a thing as green gas because it does not exist and people use some kind of mad terminology to pretend gas is anything other than a fossil fuel. Unless there is going to be a biodigester out the back of the school using the local farmer's slurry, I cannot see h…

Organisation of Working Time (Reproductive Health Related Leave) Bill 2021: Committee Stage

This Bill is straightforward. We would not be debating it if we had a majority of women in charge of this country. It is mad that we have to debate these things. This is a straightforward thing that we need. One in four women have a miscarriage. That means a good proportion of the women here, because we are 40% female, have had miscarriages. Many of my friends and family have experienced it. It is traumatic. They have to go into the maternity hospital where everyone around them is having babies. There are loads of …

Live Industry Supports: Statements

Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. Tá sí chomh gnóthach. Ní fheicim í go minic. I will take the opportunity to thank the Minister. Coming from Clare, the home of music, I can talk about what I have seen first-hand in the sector in Clare. The whole pandemic has, of course, been devastating for the sector. Despite every Cabinet Minister fighting over money, the Minister, Deputy Catherine Martin, has done well to get a very good deal and to get as much money as she could for the entertainment sector, as well as for sports a…

TRIPS Waiver: Motion

I find this debate deeply upsetting. It is a disgrace that we even have to have a debate because, to me, this is a no-brainer. It is not a trade issue but a human rights issue. I am a member of the Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment which wanted to discuss this issue. I wondered why that committee would discuss it when it is a human rights issue. I do not know why it falls under enterprise, trade and employment, which is a shallow place to put this significant issue. For those who do not know - it …

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I remind people of the importance of supporting local businesses and urge them to try to keep it green and local this Christmas. We are in a climate and biodiversity emergency. We have an emergency with people's jobs and livelihoods because of the pandemic. It has never been more important for all of us to make a huge effort to spend locally and support local businesses, producers, craftworkers and local musicians if they have albums. Every bit counts, helps these people to keep going and gives them hope. When peop…
