Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages [Resumed]
I move amendment No. 44:
In page 21, line 19, after "the" where it firstly occurs to insert "technological specifications,".
Here goes. Everyone should fasten their seatbelts. The Bill provides that the Garda and local authorities can apply to the Garda Commissioner for approval for CCTV in public places. This amendment seeks to insert a safeguard in the Bill that would make it mandatory for a member of the Garda to state the technological and software specifications of cameras to be used when they are applying for…

Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Bill 2023: Second Stage
I welcome the Minister. I am of a generation that did not grow up with vapes and therefore I find the whole thing a bit of a head scratcher when I am out for a run or going round the place and see people who are very young indeed with these nicotine inhaling products in their hands.
There are many tragedies in this world and this is probably one of the lesser ones, but it is very unfortunate one, nonetheless, as we have all had the experience. I know of one particular town close to me where the fruit and veg shop c…

Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2021: Second Stage
I welcome the visitors to the Gallery. Needless to say, it is not fashionable, and for good reason, to quote Enoch Powell in these Houses. In fact, it is a long time since I heard Enoch Powell quoted. I am a bit of a history buff and I suspect many Members enjoy looking at various famous speeches on YouTube when they have nothing better to do in the evenings and have written to all of their constituents and delivered on all of the promises. We all remember the infamous "Rivers of Blood" speech. Let there be no misu…

Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2021: Second Stage
Indeed. The Ceann Comhairle said when a former Sinn Féin Deputy brought her baby into the Dáil that it was the first time there was an actual baby in the Dáil.
My point is quite serious, masked in a small bit of attempted humour. There is a time for maturing. There is a lot of immaturity in our society. I am afraid to say that in our world today we see the increasing infantalisation of adults and perhaps an excessive tendency to defer to the younger generation. I am not worried about the impact of letting 16-year-o…

I also welcome our distinguished guests on both sides, including our Czech guests, who will be aware that the infant child of Prague played an important role in the success of many an Irish wedding by being left outside on the eve of the wedding in the hope of getting good weather for the photographs the following day, although I know of one unhappy Irish mother who in her pique at the bad weather left the infant child of Prague out for the whole week just to punish him in the elements subsequently.
