On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 172 of 425 decisive votes (10 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions

I appreciate that. While 100 resignations may reflect only 1%, the reality is that if the job was good enough I am not sure we would have any resignations. We need to carry out the exit interviews immediately and we also need to listen to the representative organisations. In County Wexford, Rosslare has seen increased and exponential growth because of Brexit. We have 550,000 passengers coming through the port. In 2022, we had 200,000 freight units come through. However, we have seen no increase in resources, despit…

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation

There are two child and adolescent mental health services, CAMHS, units in Wexford north and south, respectively. Referral rates and acceptance of referrals are very different. CAMHS north with a staffing equivalent of 6.3 whole-time equivalents sees 49% of referrals, while CAMHS south with a staffing rate of 7.3 whole-time equivalents sees 29% of referrals. Both services have only half the complement of staff. GPs tell me that the issue is that CAMHS south does not see ADHD referrals. I do not know what an access …

Nursing Home Charges and Disability Allowance Payments: Statements

I welcome the opportunity to speak on this matter, which is highly concerning. First, I want to commend those who have helped to bring it to light, which has allowed us to discuss it in this fashion today. What is involved here is the State bullying into submission those who could not afford the risk of high legal fees to seek justice and compensation, those who were wrongly charged but either did not have the means or the knowledge to go about seeking redress. Instead of protecting and serving them, we have politi…

Emergency Housing Measures: Motion [Private Members]

I congratulate the Minister of State on his appointment. I have not had the opportunity to address him in his position. He is a man of some knowledge, having spent a long time in the political sphere. I thank the Labour Party for bringing forward the motion, even though I do not agree with much of it. Nevertheless, we are discussing a very important topic. The reason I do not agree with most of the motion is that, like so many of our debates on housing, it does not address the underlying problem that is the biggest…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

Wexford gardaí are under considerable pressure. This due in no small part to the success of Rosslare Europort, where many of the Garda's resources are new deployed. Several business cases for extra resources have been submitted by senior gardaí in Wexford. What is the timeline on those resources? We also have two gardaí who are travelling from Wexford to Dundalk and Drumcondra every day. I ask that their transfer request be completed.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: Motion [Private Members]

I thank Sinn Féin for bringing forward this motion to allow us another opportunity to place the spotlight on the systemic failures within CAMHS. I want to refer first to something noted in the motion in regard to 140 “lost” cases in just one team, which no doubt, across all teams, adds up to hundreds of “lost” cases nationwide. If I were a patient or a parent or guardian of a patient whose case was lost somewhere among the dense overgrowth of the HSE bureaucracy, I would want answers and accountability. Has the Min…

Tourism Industry

In May of 2022, Fáilte Ireland launched an awareness campaign on the issue of recruitment and retention in the tourism sector. This campaign was launched in May, as the busy season was just about to get under way. With those recruitment and retention issues in mind, what proactive measures is the Department of the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media taking to address and resolve the current recruitment and retention difficulties?

Tourism Industry

I thank the Minister. I appreciate there is a lot in her response and that she has committed €15 million. However, in June last year, the Irish Examiner ran the headline "No 'quick fix' for hospitality staff shortages" in which Dr. Deirdre Curran, a lecturer at NUI Galway, who had conducted research on the industry, stated that the pandemic had worsened the problems but there were also significant instances where staff had been emotionally and physically abused. She stressed the importance of listening to workers i…

Tourism Industry

I come from County Wexford and we host some of the country's most valuable tourism attractions, such as one of the oldest lighthouses in the world at Hook Head. That must continue to thrive. The Minister mentioned our film industry. We can expect an influx of tourists given, we hope, our success rate at the Oscars and not just the fact that Irish films have been nominated. Wexford is especially heavily dependant on tourism. We employ slightly fewer than 10,000 people in the tourism and hospitality sector. We have s…

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation

The neurorehabilitation strategy implementation framework was launched in February 2019. The overarching aim of the strategy is the development of neurorehabilitation services to improve patient outcomes by providing safe, high-quality, person-centred neurorehabilitation. People in Wexford who are living with stroke injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Huntington's disease, epilepsy and many other neurological conditions are living with wholly inadequate services in their areas. They hav…

Forestry Strategy: Statements

As I am a mere Deputy in this House, I am going to read an email that has been sent to me by the private forestry sector which is clearly very angry. The email states: Just a couple of points from the private forestry sector perspective on the proposed Coillte-Gresham House partnership, particularly on the assertions of ministers McConalogue, Hackett and Ryan that Coillte are needed to reach our 8,000 hectare afforestation targets. ... The reason Ireland are failing to reach afforestation targets is not because Coi…

Interim Report on Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: Statements

There has been a lot of talk this evening. In the two and a half years since I was elected, I have stood on the floor of this House probably some 12 or 14 times to speak on CAMHS-related issues. I will say that the Minister of State, Deputy Butler, has always listened. I have always got action. We are at the stage we are at tonight because Deputy Butler insisted on the review. It is a timely review. It was instructed in April. We have an interim report. It is a serious, damning interim report. I commend the good st…
