On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 30 of 498 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I welcome the Deputy Leader to the House. I have no difficulty in supporting the Order of Business. It is a good Order of Business and I particularly single out the issue of the Private Members’ slot today. I note all of the signatures on it and I look forward to engaging with it. It is a very important piece of work in regard to the legacy issue. I myself travelled to Belfast, as did other Oireachtas Members. I look forward to sharing a different perspective on some of those issues later on. Senator Kyne is right …

Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed)

I warmly welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Ossian Smyth, and acknowledge that he is one of the Deputies who represents the constituency in which I live. I do not doubt his enormous commitment and that of the Government. I recognise the difficulties faced by the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform and support them. In these early days in government it is their prerogative to set out the national development plan. It is also their prerogative to set out a plan for housing, agri…

Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed)

I am glad that the Cathaoirleach has clarified the matter. The Government faces huge challenges in healthcare and housing in Ireland. We must deliver housing and homes for people. In fairness, arrangements have been mentioned in the budget. We must demystify financial figures and I commend the Government on producing an excellent publication called The Budget in Brief - A Citizen's Guide to Budget 2022. I call for more of such publications. We must engage with citizens about what the budget means to them and the pu…

Peat Harvesting: Statements

I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I met with him outside the gates of Leinster House just after lunch today and I know he had meaningful engagement with the people there. He has injected a dose of reality to the debate and I thank him for that. The reality is that the horticultural sector is crumbling and in dire need of assistance, particularly the mushroom sector. I note Senator Robbie Gallagher spoke about the mushrooms in Monaghan. That sector is on its knees. In terms of carbon footprint, we fly mu…

British Government Legacy Proposals: Motion

I welcome the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Coveney, to the House. I acknowledge the work Senator Currie has done pulling together broad support for her Private Members' motion. I mention the fact the Department responded to a Commencement matter I raised on this issue on 21 September 2021 and I have the Department's response here. The Minister could not be in the House on that particular day. It made for interesting reading and it gave me more hope. I was particularly taken by the closing statement. I will …

British Government Legacy Proposals: Motion

The next speaker is Senator McGreehan. I ask Senators to be conscious of the Order of Business agreed today allocating 120 minutes to this debate and the Minister has 15 minutes. I ask Senators to stick tightly to six minutes, as otherwise the list will not be completed.

Enterprise Support Services

The Senator has one minute to respond.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I join with others in the tribute to the photographer Mr. Tom Burke. What an extraordinary man. He caught the expressions, the good times, the sad times, the low times and the high times of many politicians. He stood outside Leinster House at the Kildare Street gate and was occasionally at the Merrion Street gate. I came in that side once and said to him, "You are normally at the front." He said, "I go everywhere. I am at every gate taking pictures." A few of us, including my friends and family, were in here on my …

Registration of Wills Bill 2021: Second Stage

I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." I warmly welcome the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Humphreys, to the House. She is somebody who I greatly admire. She is full of common sense and very dynamic. I know she will listen attentively to this debate. While we might disagree, the Minister has a job to do, and I always respect that. I, too, have a job to do and I gave a commitment to the former Senator, Mr. Terry Leyden, before he left this House that I would continue to raise this issue. It is ti…

Registration of Wills Bill 2021: Second Stage

One could say, follow that. I love the passion. The more passionate about it that the Minister got, the more the Northern accent came out. I do not doubt her credentials. I said to her in the anteroom before I came into the Chamber that she has a job to do, and I have a job to do. There is a terrible creak in the floorboard here every time I move forward. I am disappointed with the nine-month delay. That will bring us to next June and July. At the end of the day, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil Senators put this Bill thr…

Dyslexia Awareness Week: Statements

I welcome the Minister of State and thank her for coming to the House to focus for a short period on dyslexia. The minute I heard she was coming in I was reminded of the great autobiography of Micheal Heseltine, formerly a senior politician in the UK. He did not quite become leader of the Conservative Party for a load of internal reasons. In his autobiography he talked about hiding the issue of dyslexia and how he felt stupid. He was clever enough at five and six years of age to get a bag of sweets, empty them all …

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I wish to propose a change to the Order of Business, “That No. 14 on the Order Paper be taken before No. 1”, as I wish to introduce the Registration of Wills Bill 2021 in my name and that of my colleagues in the Independent group. I know that will be seconded later by a colleague. I want to spend my time this morning on the issue of the meat industry. I circulated to every Member of the House a story about the meat industry and the issues of concern that were published in The Guardian and which had huge traction bo…
