Gnó na Dála - Business of Dáil

IND Michael McNamara · Clare

Party shown is the one held on 2024-04-09, frozen at parse time — not the speaker's party today.

Summary of this debate

Auto-generated

First, I call the Government Chief Whip to move the proposal for the remainder of the business today. Is there a particular reason the Dáil is adjourning until 2 p.m. tomorrow? Obviously, the Cabinet has to meet and I wish it the best of luck in the challenges it faces, but surely the Dáil business can continue without the Cabinet to supervise us?

We are in the middle of a massive fodder and planting of crops crisis which could lead to a huge food shortage later on in the year. This business should have been done last week and now we are not sitting tomorrow until 2 p.m. People at home watching this at home will be aghast seeing the self-congratulatory carry-on over there and then the Dáil coming back tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Built by scoring every sentence in the debate on how distinctive its language is, then quoting the highest-scoring ones back word for word and in the order spoken. Nothing is paraphrased or invented — if a sentence appears here, it was said in the chamber. Drawn from 178 words across 7 contributions by 4 speakers.

Fáilte romhaibh ar ais. First, I call the Government Chief Whip to move the proposal for the remainder of the business today.

FG Hildegarde Naughton

It is proposed, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders, that the proceedings on the motion for approval by Dáil Éireann of the nomination of members of the Government shall, if not previously concluded, be brought to a conclusion after 1 hour and 42 minutes, and the following arrangements shall apply:

(1) the debate shall be confined to a single round and the arrangements shall be as follows:

- the speech by the Taoiseach shall not exceed 10 minutes;

- speeches by representatives of other Government parties, Sinn Féin, the Labour Party, Social Democrats, People-Before-Profit-Solidarity, the Regional Group, the Rural Independent Group and the Independent Group shall not exceed 10 minutes per party or group;

- contributions by non-aligned members shall not exceed 2 minutes; and

- members may share time; and

(2) on the conclusion of the proceedings on the motion, the Dáil shall adjourn until 2 p.m. tomorrow, whereupon the arrangements for the taking of business tomorrow and Thursday shall be determined by the House on a proposal by the Government Chief Whip.

CC Seán Ó Fearghaíl

Thank you. I take it those arrangements are agreeable to everyone?

I feel the same. I wrote a list of issues earlier last week. We are in the middle of a massive fodder and planting of crops crisis which could lead to a huge food shortage later on in the year. We are missing two weeks for Easter and a week for St. Patrick's Day. This business should have been done last week and now we are not sitting tomorrow until 2 p.m. People at home watching this at home will be aghast seeing the self-congratulatory carry-on over there and then the Dáil coming back tomorrow at 2 p.m. I totally oppose that.
