Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters

FF Mark Daly · Administrative Panel

Party shown is the one held on 2026-04-16, frozen at parse time — not the speaker's party today.

Summary of this debate

Auto-generated

My Commencement is seeking an update from the Minister of State, the Department of Finance and the Department of local government on where Government stands on that proposal. The system of funding local government in Ireland is a complex one, as local authorities derive their income from a range of local sources including commercial rates, charges for goods and services provided and local property tax as well as grants from various Government Departments and State agencies.

In line with commitments in the programme for Government, a local democracy task force was established with the local government sector to finalise a programme for the reform and strengthening of local government.

Built by scoring every sentence in the debate on how distinctive its language is, then quoting the highest-scoring ones back word for word and in the order spoken. Nothing is paraphrased or invented — if a sentence appears here, it was said in the chamber. Drawn from 5,891 words across 22 contributions by 9 speakers.

There is a change to the running order. I understand that the Minister of State, Deputy Brophy, will lead off for us today, with the first Commencement matter being taken by Senator Joe Conway.
