Creating these new hate offences will mean a crime can be investigated by gardaí from the very beginning as a potential hate crime, and evidence of their hate element can be presented and challenged in court. With regard to the definitions of "hate" and "hatred", we moved a number of amendments on the definition of "hatred" as the Bill was going through various Stages. We salute campaigners in groups such as the Coalition Against Hate Crime Ireland for highlighting the impact of hate crime and hate speech and pushing for action to be taken.
