On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 370 of 373 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage

I am on the same committee as Senator Pauline O'Reilly. We all have our own jobs and our own committees. I do not expect people who are not on that committee to be able to go to all those meetings and I do not think it is fair to say that they cannot talk about something because they did not go to the meetings. I would not expect people to be able to do that. However, I would expect people to take our word for it, whether that is me, Senator O'Reilly or Senator Higgins, when we say that this has been done to death …

In my first week of university nearly ten or 11 years ago, one of the first books I read was John Stewart Mill's On Liberty . He was a Liberal MP and Victorian political thinker. The main premise of his argument was he who knows only of his own side knows little of that. His main point was that for your argument to have any validity, it had to be tested in the court of public opinion against someone else’s argument. That is the only way you could be certain your argument was either correct or right, when you heard …

Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage

As many speakers have said, it is quite clear that this legislation is one of the most transformative climate action Bills. It is important to recognise that this is also probably one of the most transformative Bills to that has gone through the Oireachtas in the past couple of years as well. I wish to pay tribute to the Chairperson of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Climate Action, Deputy Brian Leddin. He has done a very important job in steering the legislation through the committee over the past couple of mont…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

In the last few weeks, there have been many discussions on the future of banking and housing in Ireland. I wish to raise the issue of the Central Bank of Ireland and the very restrictive rules that it has in respect of lending in comparison to other European countries. While I accept the independence of the Central Bank, the Government should make it clear that the bank should relax and reduce the lending rules. As legislators, we can act, while at the same time respecting the independence of the Central Bank. Ther…
