On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 11 of 342 decisive votes (0 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Thirty-ninth Amendment of the Constitution (The Family) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages

I withdraw the comment calling Senator Keogan a liar. What I do stand over-----

I want to emphasis the inaccuracy. It is unfortunate because, whether or not you are on the opposition side of this referendum-----

Yes, this relates to the amendment.

Thirty-ninth Amendment of the Constitution (The Family) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages

On the amendments and discussions today, it was a conversation that did nothing but include men. I spoke about my father and wanting to be associated directly with him as my father. I spoke about my children's fathers and in the absence of something happening to me I want them to be directly recognised in our Constitution, as they should be, as their family. All the conversation around unmarried couples is inclusive of men. They are literally part of the conversation. What was said was inaccurate because it is unfa…

Criminality is directly related to poverty-----

-----and poverty in one-parent households is directly related to the failure of the State and to the lack of recognition within the Constitution. Criminality is related to poverty. Poverty has been a failure of the State in terms of supporting single-parent households for generations. If you want to make the real connections, you can.

Hang on. That is a very gendered comment to make. All I said was that is not about mothers but that it is about women, and he told me to calm down.

Fortieth Amendment of the Constitution (Care) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages

It is hard to know where to begin but I would like to make a comment. It is regrettable that Senator McDowell turned around and told me to "Calm down" for making a comment on a section of the Constitution. I watched his engagement back and forth with other male Senators. I watched him interrupt the Minister. It was extremely gendered to turn around and say that, whether he wants to admit it or not. I have never once seen it. The fact that nobody intervened and the Chair continued to allow him to turn around to say …

Medicinal Products

I acknowledge that the Minister of State, Deputy Naughton, contacted me yesterday to say she would not be available today for which I thank her and she has agreed to engage further on the matter. I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Carroll MacNeill, for being here today to take this Commencement matter. Over the past few months, we have seen a very high rate of overdose due to heroin containing synthetic opioids. We often do not think of how the globe is so connected in this sense. When we look at the Taliban red…

Medicinal Products

It is good to hear that the Minister of State is exploring how to make naloxone prescription free. I understand that training is necessary but in an emergency situation it is much like the use of an EpiPen. Nasal naloxone, which is applied in a shot straight up the nose, is obviously a much easier option. There are loads of options. We must also empower community leaders. Communities are trained in suicide prevention and how to respond. If naloxone could be freely accessed in a chemist, some minimal training could …

Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages

There might have been some confusion that someone would not make it to move the amendment. We will figure it out. Senator Sherlock has moved amendment No. 1. Amendments Nos. 1 and 2 seek to address an issue that was raised by Deputy Bacik in the Dáil. Section 3(2) currently provides that an area specified in the Schedule shall be taken to be that area as constituted on 1 October 2023, but if any doubt arises as to the constituency in which any electoral division or part thereof, or any townland or part thereof is i…
