An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business
I have two matters to raise today. The first is the fact that Castleconnell post office is due to open on 20 February and this is good news for the people of Castleconnell because they have had to travel to Newport and other areas around from the village which is quite a distance. For older people who did not have cars or access it is good news that the new post office will open on 20 February.
Second, I welcome the Taoiseach's visit to University Hospital Limerick, UHL, tomorrow. This is good news both for the hos…

I would like to be associated with the vote and words of sympathy for the late Niamh Bhreathnach. I knew her because her uncle and aunt lived in the house where I grew up. She used to visit there on holiday. Believe it or not, her uncle, the late Michael Kennedy, was a Fine Gael councillor in Limerick. My sympathies to her family and husband, as well as the Kennedy family who are her first cousins. They have been very close down through the years. I met some of the family members yesterday and passed on my sympathi…

Central Bank (Individual Accountability Framework) Bill 2022: Second Stage
I thank the Minister of State for attending to discuss this important Bill. When we think about it, the issues of accountability and transparency are the kernel of this Bill, which itself is strengthening the original legislation. This is to be achieved by prescribing responsibilities and providing for the allocation of responsibility and accountability for the management and operation of regulated financial service providers, RFSPs, to individuals, while maintaining a balance with the responsibilities that properl…

An tOrd Gnó (Atógáil) - Order of Business (Resumed)
One of the main news stories this morning has been the 24 students who have not received school places in Limerick. My heart goes out to those students, their families and their current schools. The common application system was set up in Limerick 17 years ago when it happened that an awful lot of children did not receive school places. It has worked relatively well over the last 17 years but there is the odd year when a glitch happens. A lot of students apply for the same school and there is an oversubscription.
I…

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: Statements
I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House to discuss this important topic. I acknowledge the fact that the report would not be out there without the Minister of State asking for it. I acknowledge that and the work she has done. I know she has an interest in the area.
My concerns regard CHO 3. The Minister of State would not expect anything else from me. The report on CHO 3 was the most damaging of the lot. Some 140 children were concerned. I hope they have all been contacted and I believe they have. A n…

UL Hospitals Group: Motion
I second the motion. I thank the Minister for coming here to address this all-important motion. I acknowledge the amount of investment - up to €98 million over recent years - put into the University Limerick Hospitals Group. While many parts of the hospital are working, there are parts that are not. I know the Minister is well aware of this and that he has visited the hospital. I acknowledge, as did Senator Conway, that when the management of UHL came before the Committee on Health, they apologised to people - the …

UL Hospitals Group: Motion
There was an article in the newspaper yesterday that stated Limerick had the highest trolley numbers. While I acknowledge the number has come down, we are still at the top of the list. We have the top med-tech and biopharma companies. We have a lot of companies that are relocating. I was at the launch of the rebranding of Legato as one of the top and fastest growing healthcare companies.
Many companies are locating operations in the mid-west. A large number of them are doing so because they are involved in the area…
