On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 1,078 of 1,089 decisive votes (3 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Hospital Facilities

I thank the Senator for raising this important issue and for her constant advocacy for health services in Limerick and the mid-west region. She has worked closely with me on various projects for mental health and I acknowledge that, particularly with regard to CAST in Limerick, which is going from strength to strength. I am taking this on behalf of the Minister for Health, Deputy Carroll MacNeill. As the Senator has alluded to, the Government is working to address the challenges facing acute care in the mid-west. The Senator mentioned CAST. Superintendent Andrew Lacey drove this from the start. I have a had a lot of discussions with him. That is a sign of a positive initiative that should be replicated around the country. That is what we are hoping to do. It is really important that the staff are in place to deliver the vital services. I also compliment the regional executive officer, Sandra Broderick, who is open to discussions with all politicians and has made significant changes there. I have some statistics. In December…

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business

I will start at the beginning in relation to the motion that Sinn Féin and the Independent Technical Group have tabled. I will not accept that motion. In relation to the International Protection Act, which will be commenced on Friday, we should all note, and the Taoiseach spoke extensively to this, that the only change on Friday is that the balance between the State and the asylum applicant will shift in favour of the State. It will become much harder for those claiming asylum who are not entitled to asylum to succ…

I thank Deputy Moynihan for raising this really important issue of eye care services in line with emerging trends. I am taking this on behalf of the Minister for Health, Deputy Carroll MacNeill. There are measures either in place or being progressed to address the emerging trends in eye care services, such as those due to an ageing demographic or an increase in the prevalence of myopia. The Health Service Executive provides optical services free of charge to children referred from child health and school health ser…

It is great to have the opportunity to discuss the reform of eye care services in line with emerging trends across the country. Deputy Michael Murphy, who is sitting in front of Deputy Moynihan, has discussed with me several times the issue of getting the right clinicians into the job. We have been really challenged, for example, in south Tipperary in getting a consultant optometrist in there to fill that post. That is why it is really important we have the training skills across the country. We do not have enough …

I thank Deputy Murphy for raising this very important issue. I am taking this Topical Issue on behalf of the Minister of State with responsibility for older people and housing, Deputy Kieran O'Donnell, who sends his apologies for not being able to be here tonight. The Deputy is quite right. I was a Minister of State in the previous Dáil for four and a half years, and one of the areas where we made a lot of progress was dementia. Every day in Ireland, there are 30 new cases of dementia. There were 30 yesterday, ther…

I thank the Deputy. Many of the memory clinics evolved organically over many years. I am aware that there is a memory technology resource room in Clonmel, which supports people with technology when, for example, they are living well at home with dementia, but it is important that we get the memory clinic back up and running. These clinics are a vital cog in the wheel. There is an excellent dementia adviser in south Tipperary. I have met her many times. She is fantastic. There is a great partnership with the Alzheim…
