On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 34 of 819 decisive votes (8 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Employment (Collective Redundancies and Miscellaneous Provisions) and Companies (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage (Resumed)

I do not think the Minister of State, Deputy Richmond, was here for the first part of my Second Stage contribution.

Employment (Collective Redundancies and Miscellaneous Provisions) and Companies (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage (Resumed)

I made many of the points I wish to raise. I will briefly summarise. My significant interest in this is particularly informed by the experience of the Debenhams workers. The Minister of State is aware they went through an incredible struggle, undertaking 406 days of strike action to try to vindicate their rights. Under a collective redundancy agreement that had been agreed with Debenhams, when the company went into liquidation or they were made redundant, they were to get two weeks' statutory redundancy and two add…

Imposing Sanctions on Israel: Motion [Private Members]

I thank the Social Democrats for bringing forward this motion. Shame on the United States, shame on Britain, shame on the European Union and shame on this Government for continuing to give Israel impunity while it carries out a genocide and a massacre on the people of Gaza. On 18 October, Solidarity-People Before Profit put forward an amendment to a Government motion on Gaza where we asked for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador, for sanctions against Israel and for Israel's referral to the International Crimin…

Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements

It is very obvious to everybody who is being honest that Israel is engaged in a genocidal massacre in Gaza. Why does the Taoiseach, along with the sponsors of Israel, namely, the United States, Britain and the European Union, continue to persist with the falsehood that this has anything to do with Israeli self-defence or that Israel is in any way a normal state, particularly when its own spokespeople have made it clear what they are doing? Gallant has described all Palestinians as human animals. The Israelis have s…

Employment (Collective Redundancies and Miscellaneous Provisions) and Companies (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage

Some sort of legislative response to the scandalous situation that faced the Debenhams workers has been a long time coming. Those workers were forced to engage in a strike for 406 days because of the absolutely despicable manner in which Debenhams laid them off. It made them all redundant and then refused to honour the collective agreement to give them two weeks' statutory redundancy plus two weeks' pay per year of service. This had been promised in a collective agreement. There had been cases before this, such as …

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation

Does the Minister think there has ever been any other government in the world that has been told it could have an additional €14 billion in revenue and said, "No, we do not want it", and then went on to spend €8 million in legal fees fighting to ensure we do not get the money? That €14 billion is more than three times the housing budget. Imagine what that money could do to address the housing crisis. Now we have an opinion from the advocate general of the European Union saying that the original ruling, effectively,…

Cabinet Committees

A point I have made to the Taoiseach many times is that for people who are working and whose income exceeds the social housing threshold, the only available option is a cost-rental home. However, the delivery of cost-rental homes is very small at the moment and, therefore, people who find themselves in housing difficulty and who are working and over the thresholds, or in quite a few cases people who find themselves homeless, have no options available to them. They do not get the housing assistance payment, HAP, or …

International Relations

The Taoiseach has indicated there may be war crimes being committed by Israel in Gaza. Most people have no doubt they are being committed because they are happening right in front of us and, critically, Israel is not hiding it. Leading ministers and military personnel have publicly declared their intention to commit war crimes - to starve the entire population of water, food, gas and electricity. That is a war crime and they have said it. They have described Palestinians as human animals and said there will only be…

Post-European Council Meeting: Statements

On Saturday, I was a participant in an online international event organised by the Rohingya people in solidarity with Gaza. Among others, there were numerous academics and experts in attendance, including many Jewish people who were expert in the area of genocide. They, along with many others, including many representatives of the Jewish population worldwide, are rightly describing what Israel is doing in Gaza as an act of genocide. Israel is engaged in brutal, horrific, barbaric, systematic and deliberate massacre…

Post-European Council Meeting: Statements

Does the Minister of State not think, and I also put this question to many in the Opposition, that it is time to re-evaluate the notion that Israel is some sort of normal state and re-evaluate the so-called two-state solution?
