On prevailing side: this member voted with the winning side in 356 of 832 decisive votes (4 abstentions excluded). Read it as a government-or-opposition indicator rather than a measure of influence — the figure is near 100% for members supporting the government of the day and near 0% for those opposing it.

Party over time

This is the point of the site: contributions keep the party held on the day, not the one held now.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation

I want to raise the very important issue of our excellent home care support assistants, HCSAs, not least in County Kerry where they do great work taking care of people in their own homes. At the moment, a new system is being set up online to book holidays, do the travel allowance, the wages and all of that. Unfortunately, as the Taoiseach knows, not everybody is 100% up to speed and on iPads, apps and all of that. There seems to be a problem. I previously raised in the House an issue with mileage for the HCSAs and …

Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed)

I want to tackle this issue. In speaking to the amendment, I want to come at it this way. Some of the retailers have been talking about this phoney price war with the reduction in the prices of milk and butter. I call it a phoney war because all it is is a way of putting their names out there and giving the impression they are giving a better deal to the consumer. We all want to see mom's purse being protected on a Friday and we want to see the cost of food and shopping being brought down, but we do not want to see…

Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed)

I support Deputy McNamara's amendment. Like the previous one, it is about protecting farmers. Thinking back to a couple of short weeks ago, the Taoiseach, thankfully - I asked him to do so the day before - met with Macra na Feirme, whose members marched to Leinster House. It was reminiscent of the time, 50 or 60 years ago, that IFA members marched from all parts of this country to Dublin. At that time, Charles Haughey, God be good to him, was the Minister for Agriculture. They marched because of what they saw as th…

Is feirmeoir beag mé, so I just want to declare that. We are supposed to do that. I support the amendment as well, 100%. At critical times and critical lines, of course the Irish language should be used at every opportunity and promoted. I am reminded, and please allow me this one indulgence, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle-----

Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed)

We must never look behind. We always have to look forward. I want to remind you, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, of a time when a Minister decided he wanted to change the name of the great town of Dingle in County Kerry.

Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed)

Yes. My good God, talk about starting world war three. The good people of Dingle in County Kerry fought a hard battle. I remember that my late father, God be good to him, led the charge in favour of getting their name back. Yes, we want the Minister to do this here this evening, but we always have to be mindful that we will use the language where it is correct and proper and we want to do so. I commend the Deputy on bringing this small amendment to the Minister. I hope the Government will accept it.

Food Costs and High Grocery Bills: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members]

They will start kidnapping hens in California yet at the price of an egg. I thank Sinn Féin for bringing this debate to the House tonight but I have to say that Sinn Féin and all the other people gladly voted for the carbon tax. Many of them said at the time that the tax was not enough. I remember distinctly Sinn Féin Deputies saying that we were not going far enough fast enough. I remember that and I do remember things. The Rural Independent Group firmly believes in and has always advocated for a desperately neede…

If an egg is worth €1, all I can say is a hen in California will be the same price as a cow in Ireland.

Let me be clear: personally, the Minister of State is a very nice, affable man.

Public Transport

-----and I will tell the Minister of State why. First, look at the folly of what is going on in Foynes, where we have mulch coming in from Brazil. There are thousands of tonnes of it and it must be transported up through the country to replace the peat we were producing ourselves. The Minister of State may shake his head because he is ashamed of that fact, which has made a lot of headlines in the last couple of days. I put down parliamentary questions on it and this is not the first ship that has come in. Of course…
